The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer & Grand Wagoneer
The Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are set to make a comeback and will be Jeep’s first foray into the luxury category. While the car is currently only a concept, currently sporting an extravagant interior and bold styling for the exterior, Jeep has said that the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer will be ready for production and in showrooms next year.
The concept Grand Wagoneer that Jeep has showcased is based on the full-size Ram 1500 and has three-row seating, the new Wagoneers are expected to challenge long-established large SUVs like the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Ford Expedition, and Chevy Tahoe. If you base what’s to be expected from the Wagoneer on what is currently available in the models the Wagoneer is challenging then you should expect a wide range of premium options, multiple powertrain configurations, and higher price tags. As with all vehicles nowadays, definitely expect a myriad of driver-assistance technology, competitive tow ratings, and Jeep’s ever-present trail-capable hardware.
Jeep may have unveiled a version of the Grand Wagoneer that looks pretty close to production we still can’t say for certain what the production version will look like or even what the price of each model (Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer) may be. As of now, there hasn’t been any info released on the pricing of Jeep’s new three-row luxury SUV but Jeep’s president has said that the Wagoneer will start around $60k and the fully-loaded Grand Wagoneer will cost over $100k.
Our Best Guess At Pricing
• Wagoneer – $60,000 (est)
• Grand Wagoneer – $75,000 (est)
Performance
Right off the bat in terms of performance, one of the bigger highlights will be the plug-in-hybrid powertrain option for the Grand Wagoneer. Details about how the gas engine pairs with the plug-in or the max range of all-electric driving haven’t been released yet, but this does coincide with Jeep’s plans to make every model in the brand has a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version by 2022. Jeep has stated that both versions of the Wagoneer will have the same body-on-frame underpinnings that the Ram 1500 currently has, but they’ll have an independent rear suspension as opposed to the 1500’s solid rear axle.
Engine-wise, the 2022 Wagoneers will most likely sport the same engine and transmission options as found in the Ram trucks. Going off of that you are likely to see a 3.6-liter V-6 engine as a base and a more powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 as an option as well. Both will likely come with Ram’s hybrid system called eTorque. There is a chance that the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer could also follow the Ram route and offer a diesel 3.0-liter V-6, but we will just have to wait till we get closer to release day to find that out.
Styling & Tech
With three rows of seats available, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will finally give larger families the chance to join the Jeep brand. Based on the concept photos released by Jeep the interior looks more elegant and high-tech than anything the company has produced before. For the most part, concept vehicles tend to use glass and sustainable materials much more than the actual production version but some of the features like the two-spoke steering wheel and the EST. 1963 inscription will make the cut since they are inspired by the original Grand Wagoneer.
The driver will have an all-digital dashboard/gauge cluster with limited physical controls. The interior will also sport the customizable ambient light that is found in most Jeep vehicles and a full-pane glass roof (again, that might not make it to production but we’ll be crossing our fingers that it will).
On the technology front, we are looking at a new generation of infotainment capability for Jeep. The Grand Wagoneer concept is touchscreen galore with not only a 12.1-inch gauge cluster for the driver, but there’s also a 12.1-inch center touchscreen for entertainment, a 10.3-inch touchscreen below the center one that controls the HVAC system, AND there is also a 10.3-inch touchscreen on the dash in front of the passenger seat. Now that’s a lot of screens. While it all sounds like a blast, it’ll be interesting to see if all that light information will be any kind of distraction for the driver.
In this day and age, we should all just expect Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to be built into the infotainment center as standard so we expect both of those capabilities in the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer base models and up. If you thought Jeep was done with the touchscreens, you were wrong. The second-row passengers not only get a 10.3-inch touchscreen on the second-row console but they also each get their own 10.1-inch touchscreen in the front seat headrests. Oh, and in terms of sound, the concept Grand Wagoneer is rocking a McIntosh stereo that features 23 speakers. We’ll have to wait to see if that is a must-have until we get one on the showroom but we stand ready with our favorite jams to test the capabilities once the Wagoneer has arrived.
Safety
Obviously, because the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are still in concept mode, they haven’t been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, so stay tuned for that info. But there isn’t a doubt that they will come with a bunch of different standard and optional driver-assistance features that are found across the entire Jeep line-up.
Warranty
Jeep currently offers a competitive limited and powertrain warranty, as well as gives all models three years of free maintenance.
• Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
• Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
• Three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance is included
Overall
Jeep is planning on shaking up the luxury SUV scene with the release of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in 2021. Not only is it reviving an old legend, but it is also coming out with powerful new features and exterior and interior design work that will leave Jeep fans drooling. One of the bigger highlights is the passenger capacity. Jeep has never had a vehicle capable of hauling around 7 passengers so it is good to see them keeping up with the likes of other recent 7-passenger vehicles released by Subaru, VW, and Kia. We are eagerly awaiting more info and will be sure to update everyone as we learn more about the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
